Kathedraal van de Aartsengel St. Michael.
Cathedral
of St. Michael the Archangel.
The Archangel Cathedral is located on the very edge of the hill facing Sobornaya
Square from the south. The edifice replaced the old 14th century church. It ia a
five-domed structure built by the Venetian architect Alevisio Lamberti da
Mantaniano. In spite of the traditional composition one can see the influence of
the Italian Renaissance in the ornate decoration of the facades and in the use of
elements of the Classical Orders. Numerous repairs after the fires have altered
its architecture to some extend. During 1540-1700 the Cathedral was the burial
place of the Russian Grand Princes and Tsars. There are about fifty tombs,
including those of Ivan Kalita and Ivan the Terrible. In the arched loggia above
the entrance 16th century murals and a splendid white-stone carved portal can
still be found. In the interior some outstanding murals from 1652-1666 remain,
depicting scenes from the life of the Archangel Michael, to whom the cathedral
is dedicated, and the first Russian Grand Princes - Aleksander Nevsky, Andrei
Bogolubsky and Ivan Kalita. The carved-wood iconostasis is more than 14m high. The icon of the Archangel Michael is attributed to Andrei Rublev.
