Grote Kremlinpaleis.
Grand
Kremlinpalace.
The 125m long facade stands on a steep bank overlooking the river Moskva.
Since the 14th century the Palace of the Grand Princes and Tsars had replaced
each other at this site. The first ones had be wooden, the later ones of stone.
Built between 1838-1849 the present edifice adjoins the Palace of Facets and
Terem Palace at the rear. The Grand Kremlin Palace was a residence of the Tsar's family and a place for imperial receptions.
It is constructed of brick with stone facing, and metal rafters support the roof.
The main approach is from the south facade. A sweeping staircase leads to the
second floor occupied by a suite of reception halls. The most remarkable of
these are the Great St. Georges's Hall commemorating the recipients of this
major military decoration, the octagonal Vladimir's Hall, connected through the
'sacred anteroom' with the old chambers, and the Catharine Chamber in the former Tsarina's apartment, richly
decorated with precious columns of green malachite. The Tsar's apartments are also well preserved up to now, and
include valuable china, statues and furniture.
Today the Palace is the seat of the Supreme Soviet and is only open to visitors on special occasions.
