Klokkentoren van Ivan de Grote.
Bell Tower
of Ivan the Great.
This is the compositional centre of the Kremlin. The ensemble includes two structures
for housing church bells: the taller octagonal main tower and the adjoining arched
campanile, both crowned with golden onion-shaped domes. The main tower was the
first to be constructed and originally consisted of two octagonal tiers. In 1600 a
further tier was added, and a dome. The total height of the edifice with its cross
reaches 81 m. The tower has twenty-one bells, the largest weigthing 64 tons. Three
hundred and twenty-nine steps leads to its top.
Construction of the other structure began during 1533-1543 and was only completed
in the 17th century with the addition of another campanile, the Filaret. Inside the
arched tower some thirty bells are installed. The largest weight 70 tons. In 1812
Napoleon's troops tried to blow up the Bell Tower but failed, though the damage was
great. It was restored in 1814-1815. The Tsar's Bell standing on a stone pedestal
nearby is the largest bell in the world. It was cast in 1733-1735 and weights more
than 200 tons. The bas-reliefs on its exterior show Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich and
Tsarina Anna Ivanovna.
