Lenin
mausoleum.
The focal point of Red Square is the Lenin Mausoleum, sited between the Spasskaya and
Nikolskaya towers, built to contain the embalmed body of Lenin. The present
building replaced the original wooden structure built just after Lenin's death. From the
balcony of the Mausoleum Soviet leaders have watched the great Moscow parades.
Behind the Mausoleum is a cemetery with the remains of many leading Soviet
politicians including Stalin, Brezhnev and most recently, Yuri Andropov and Konstantin
Chernenko. Some urns are set in the Kremlin wall.
